Looking at Outdoor for an Oaks

25th November, 2011

Serenade Rose was an outstanding dual-Oaks winner for trainer Lee Freedman, so it should be no surprise that her first foal, a filly in her image, should have ability.

Outdoor, a bay filly by champion sire Redoute's Choice, couldn't have been more impressive winning her debut yesterday at Bendigo with Ben Melham in the saddle.

Melham settled the filly near last in the 1300m maiden before picking his way through the field on the bend. Outdoor let down strongly to win untouched.

Trainer Anthony Freedman believes Outdoor, who is bred and owned by Darley, is an ideal filly for the Group 1 AJC Australian Oaks (2400m, Randwick) in the autumn.

"She's a lot like her month in appearance and action, but she's a bit bigger being by Redoute's Choice," Freedman said.

"As you would expect from her pedigree, we have given her time, and she should be even better next preparation in the autumn. I'd like to think she could advance to be an Oaks contender in the autumn ... she certainly can stay like her mother."

Serenade Rose, by Stravinsky from Rose Of Tralee (by Sadler's Wells), unfortunately, and ironically, died on VRC Oaks day three weeks ago, after giving birth to a colt by Lonhro. In 2005, Serenade Rose emerged late in the spring to win the Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m, Flemington) and returned in the autumn of 2006 to win the Group 1 AJC Oaks.

A good line on how Black Caviar stacks up against the sprinting greats of yesteryear can be measured through how insignificant their career records can appear in comparison to the unbeaten mare.
