Lucas Cranach performed brilliantly to finish third behind Dunaden in the Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup.
Jockey Corey Brown gave the German import a wonderful ride, and the game little horse gave his all in response.
"Perhaps the issues we had with his hoof for the past three weeks cost him in the end, but he ran a great race," trainer Anthony Freedman said.
"If you offered me any horse from the Cup to train in the next 12 months, I'd take Lucas Cranach. He's a very good horse."
Lucas Cranach will go for a well-earned spell, although an autumn programme hasn't been mapped out. The obvious options include the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m, Flemington) and the Group 1 The BMW (2400m, Rosehill).
"He has a turn of foot, so he might be a Cox Plate horse next spring," Freedman said.

A good line on how Black Caviar stacks up against the sprinting greats of yesteryear can be measured through how insignificant their career records can appear in comparison to the unbeaten mare.
